Valentine’s Day is great if you’re dating, engaged, married or otherwise ‘coupled’. It’s great for breaking up the post-holiday winter months and adding some color to the house while we all patiently wait for spring to get here. Kids love it. Overall it can be a lot of fun. But there’s something about Valentine’s Day that never settled well with me.
A lot of people I love are sad on Valentine’s Day.
For them, it’s a reminder that they’re single, divorced, or that their spouse has passed on. Maybe their husband is on call, works shift work, is a first responder, or is deployed. My husband travels a lot so there is a good chance every year that he’s going to be out of town on Valentine’s Day. With all the jewelry, flower, and other romantic gift commercials, it can get depressing.
So a couple of years ago, I decided to invite all of my girlfriends over who were also going to be alone on Valentine’s Day and have our own little celebration. I love these ladies and isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is really about? Love?
