Bacon wrapped Lil Smokies fit into what I call the Southern food trifecta–sweet, salty and savory. Are they horrible for you? Depends. If you’re looking for an awesome appetizer, they’re perfect. If you’re trying to lose weight, they’re horrible for you. But wow, are they good.
I got this recipe from my friend Marlena after I nearly cleaned out her entire casserole dish. I could not get enough of them! When I found out how simple they were to make, I had to share the recipe. Here’s what you need:
Lil Smokies (I used the large bag and had alot left over)
Thick sliced bacon, cut into thirds
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
1 stick butter
1. Wrap Lil’ Smokies in bacon and place in a 2 quart rectangular casserole dish.
2. Melt butter. In a measuring cup, mix together melted butter and 1 cup of brown sugar. Pour over Lil’ Smokies.
3. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar on top.
4. Bake at 375 degrees for 18 minutes, then 15 more minutes at 400 degrees. Allow them to cool.
They are going to look like they’re swimming in butter and brown sugar, and that’s because they are! Use a slotted spoon for serving but don’t get rid of the liquid. It makes a great glaze for pork chops later. Just pour into a plastic storage container and refrigerate until you’re ready to use it.
Easy, right? For more appetizer ideas, check out the Recipes page!
