This room makeover couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. With Sophie starting kindergarten in August and the baby due in September, Ryan and I wanted to give Sophie something to mark the big changes in her life in a way that would make her feel special and excited about all these new things. And what better way to do that than with a new room!
We gave her a lot of control over her space. She wanted a pink room so I chose 3 shades of pink and she picked the one she liked the most, Pantone ‘Peony’, which also happened to be the boldest. She picked a lot of the accessories too. We had planned on giving her a daybed but a bunk bed was all she could talk about. So we switched gears and found a great used one that we painted white.
And even though the finished product didn’t match my initial vision for the room, I actually like it better. It is soooo Sophie and I absolutely love how much her space resembles her.
The room kind of came together around these curtains. They were the first thing Sophie spotted and were the basis for the color scheme and the inspiration for everything else that went in the room.
I love Hobby Lobby. I found so much cute stuff there including this turquoise metal flower that filled this little wall space perfectly.
If it were up to Sophie, everything, including the bed and bedding would have been pink. Luckily, she was open to compromising when she saw this fluffy throw pillow and turquoise bedding at Walmart. The bed was unfinished when we bought it so we painted it with 2 coats of Valspar Ultra Semi-Gloss in White with a coat of Kilz underneath it.
Sophie lost her favorite lovey blanket, “Purple Baby”, at the Minneapolis Airport last Thanksgiving. She was devastated. A couple months later, she drew this picture of Purple Baby so she wouldn’t forget her and it’s been hanging on her wall ever since. Needless to say, the new room wouldn’t be complete without including Purple Baby:)
This mirror was actually hanging in the birthday party section at Hobby Lobby. Just goes to show you that sometimes the perfect decorations are hanging in the most unlikely places.
In hindsight, I should have taken “before” pictures. The only one I took was this one, when it was taped and everything was already out except the bed.
Oh well. The most important thing is that Sophie LOVES her new room. We can’t blast her out of it.
Now it’s time to get busy on the baby’s room!
